Douhua is a small, unassuming kind of food. Served in a bowl and eaten with a spoon, it is soft, delicate, and not particularly defined in shape.

In Taiwan, it is an ordinary part of everyday life, and it has gradually become more familiar in Japan as well. At first, however, it seemed somewhat distant from what one might imagine from the word Daio — “Great King” — in the name of the shop.

The owner, who makes the douhua himself, calls himself Douhua Daio.
“Great King” sounds slightly grandiose. And yet, when it is claimed by someone who has spent many years making douhua, teaching others how to make it, and helping to introduce it to a wider audience, that grandiosity gradually begins to feel natural. It is part joke, part title.
To treat something small as though it were slightly larger.
As we thought about the shop, this began to feel like a useful clue.

By “larger,” we did not mean making the space more luxurious or simply increasing the scale of things. Instead, an ordinary corner might be cut away more generously than necessary. Something that could have been thin might be given unexpected thickness. A small opening might be given a more pronounced outline than it strictly needs.

Each intervention is minor in itself. But as these gestures repeat across walls, counters, shelves, and openings, a slightly unfamiliar sense of scale begins to emerge within the shop.

The materials themselves remain familiar. What becomes less familiar is the way they are put together, and the presence they acquire as a result.

Perhaps the name Douhua Daio works in much the same way.
Douhua makes sense.
A Great King makes sense.
But when the two are placed side by side, something feels just slightly off.

We wanted that slight oddness — and the affection it somehow produces — to be present throughout the shop.
