Renovation of a three-story (B1–2F) detached house in a dense urban setting in Tokyo.

The existing building presented multiple challenges—steep stairs, insufficient storage and toilet spaces, a poorly accessible dim storage room, and stagnant airflow caused by the original layout—requiring both localized interventions and overall reorganization. Within a limited budget, the project aimed not only to improve functional performance but also to create a living environment in which moments of everyday calm emerge naturally, quietly renewing the quality of urban dwelling.

The interior is defined by a restrained greige-based material palette, with selected rooms incorporating finishes aligned with the client’s preferences to maintain tonal coherence. Lighting is structured around downlights, complemented by extensive indirect lighting integrated into storage and built-in furniture, balancing daily usability with spatial clarity. Each room is planned slightly larger than its minimum functional requirement, allowing for spatial ease and adaptability over time.

Rather than pursuing expressive form, the project focuses on creating an environment in which daily life itself quietly comes to the foreground.
